Review: This is one adorable book! Oh wait, should I say a book about ghost hunting is adorable? I don't want any wayward ghosts in my house to get upset. Ah, forget it, it's adorable! Graham has included pretty much everything a young girl needs to know about ghosts and "hunting" them, as well as some fun activities that one should do when holding a ghost-themed party!
Throughout the book, there are mini interviews with official Women in Ghost Hunting, which includes who they are, who they work for, their website and/or emails, and how long they have been investigating ghosts. I thought this was a cool addition since it seems that most of the well-known ghost hunters a la television are men. It also allows girls to get various perspectives and stories from those in the "business."
There are sections in the book for the best places to find ghosts, what to put in your Ghost Hunting kit, safety tips (never ghost-hunt alone and always have at least one adult), how to avoid false clues (especially involving the pictures you take), and some fun quizzes!
My favorite section is probably Chapter 3, as it's all about Phantom Parties. This includes-
Games such as Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board (I played this when I was little!) and Table Tipping
Top Ten list of Ghost Movies to watch - includes Ghost Busters and Nancy Drew (I like that the author included a short summary and the rating)
Fearless Phantom Game - you copy down the poem in the book (too cute by the way) and include fun goodies...then drop it off at a friend's or neighbor's house (that you know won't mind) by ringing the doorbell and taking off for them to find it. I would seriously love to do this with my own friends. Graham even includes a list of fun gifts to include with the poem.
Recipe for Bloody Muddy Ghost Cookies which sound awesome. I wish I had time to make them before doing this review so I could let you know what I thought...but at any rate, I think they would be yummy!
Later in the book, there is one other recipe for Post-Ghost Granola. I think the recipes are another favorite feature of mine. It's just a cute touch for any party or ghost-hunting team.
Finally, the book includes plenty of stories of real-life ghost stories, as well as the first few people that claimed to see ghosts. Were they telling the truth or just giving in to the hype? We probably will never know for sure what all is real...but I did like the stories of ghost-spottings, especially concerning some famous names like Elvis Presley! For the writing inclined, Graham also includes plenty of great tips on writing your own ghost story and even provides some bits of stories that the girls can then finish!
This would be a great summer gift as it's a fun book for the little ghouls- I mean girls- in your life to host a Phantom Party and courtesy of Graham and Sourcebooks, check out their Party Guide which includes one recipe in the book and another that is not, as well as some fun activities and quizzes for the perfect slumber party.
